Let's start off with a brief look at what BIM is. The purpose of BIM is to give each actor just the information they need at just the right time throughout a building’s lifecycle to support its effective design, creation, and use.

  • The “B” in BIM stands for “Building” – since it’s about methods and technologies for the effective design, creation, and use of buildings.
  • The “I” in BIM stands for “Information” – the 3D representations and non-graphical data in the digital model of a building. It’s the key to managing a building throughout its lifecycle.
    • Besides 3D information – for design, engineering, and production – there’s also
      • 4D information that incorporates time (scheduling, planning, and control),
      • 5D which adds costs and analysis,
      • 6D that includes sustainability, and
      • 7D which looks at facility management over the entire lifetime of an asset.
  • The “M” in BIM has three meanings:
    • “Modelling” – the collaborative processes by which actors create, update, and store relevant information about a building throughout its life.
    • “Model” – the ‘data container’ or digital model of a building where information about the building is stored.
    • “Management” – actors’ use of a building information model for their needs.

Libraries in BIM

Currently there are plenty of software options available, any one of which can be selected as a BIM environment for design. Most of them use generic libraries that favor the development region or country’s standards (Revit and US standards, DDS-CAD and German standards, etc.). To design a real building, we need real-world elements with real behavior.

CGTrader, the 3D model marketplace of which AGACAD CEO Donatas Aksomitas was a founding angel investor, recently raised €2 million in funding to accelerate global expansion. It’s another example of AGACAD’s vision and contribution to creating the technologies for tomorrow’s AEC.

The investment round was led by Karma Ventures, with participation of Intel Capital and Practica Capital. Karma Ventures Partner Kristjan Laanemaa said that CGTrader is well-placed to become the world’s largest provider of 3D models: “Their track record convinced us that by having more resources they can scale the business and become the global leader in this space.”

Our team here at AGACAD wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year ahead!

This time of year is always a good time to look back, take at least a moment — hopefully we take many — and realize how much we have to be grateful for. Family and friends. Successes that have brought us closer to where we long to be. Failures that have given us the opportunity to learn, however difficult it may have been. The gift of each day we’ve had. Life itself.

Even when it comes to something like BIM, there’re so many things we have to be thankful for, things and not infrequently people that get glossed over. The ability to program or write or imagine a new way of doing something — and the person who helps make it a reality. The creativity involved in design. The chance to attend conferences. For safety in travel.

Here at AGACAD, we’re particularly grateful to our clients. If it weren’t for you using our software, we wouldn’t be making the stuff! Many of you have contributed to improvements with your ideas and suggestions. A BIG thank-you goes out to you! And of course, we're very grateful for our webinar attendees, trial users, readers of the blog, and those who keep up with us on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or LinkedIn.

May 2018 be a happy one in all respects, and may you find fulfillment and success in your endeavors. And may you have peace — peace in spirit, peace in your family, peace in your work. We look forward to collaborating with you in 2018!

All the best!

Check out the November 2017 edition of “AGACAD Advances”! In the past month or so, we’ve been to a couple of conferences, BIMAXON was unveiled, and we’ve hosted several webinars to provide tips and updates. And those are just a few things going on! We invite you to read the newsletter for a quick summary.

We just got back from Autodesk University, and it's already time to prepare for the next big event: BIM World MUNICH. Even though this is only the second year of this conference, it’s already a leading BIM event in central Europe, with well over 100 exhibitors! We’re looking forward to exhibiting next to Contelos (our partner in the DACH region) at this growing event that brings together so many engaged players in the AEC sector. See you soon, Contelos!

Along with our lineup of Revit tools, our team will be on hand to demo and discuss BIMAXON, a new-generation BIM platform that gives real-time access to data from all sources, be that source Revit, Tekla, Navisworks, Archicad, IFC, etc. One of the primary purposes of BIMAXON is to reduce information to only what's necessary and delivering that -- no more, no less -- to the right BIM actors at the right time in the building life-cycle process. That means eliminating unnecessary information that clogs up our heads and IT systems. Which translates into increased efficiency and accuracy all around.

AGACAD will introduce its new-generation building information management platform during Autodesk University in Las Vegas. The beta launch of the BIMAXON platform, “a brain for a building”, will be a major highlight of our participation in AU from November 14 to 16, 2017.

"The theme for this AU is ‘The Future of Making Things’, and BIMAXON is pioneering technology for the AEC future everyone’s dreaming about,” says Donatas Aksomitas, AGACAD’s CEO.

“It’s the kind of advanced information management and exchange that’s needed for a world of VR/AR and IoT, for buildings with Artificial Intelligence. Imagine data from all sources in one place with real-time access and BIM with infinite dimensions. We’ll have a HoloLens to show it off with mixed reality,” he said.

In his latest post over at the BIMAXON blog, AGACAD CEO Donatas Aksomitas gets into more specifics about standardizing BIM object properties. He sees a lot to be gained from standardizing. Check out the post: The ‘Identification’ class of BIM object properties

For more background, see his post from earlier this year: It’s time to standardize BIM object properties!

BIMAXON will be beta-launched next week at Autodesk University! If you'll be there, look us up at booth A324! We'll be in the Building Design & Fabrication sector (next to food court #4).

On his BIMAXON blog, AGACAD CEO Donatas Aksomitas has been developing his thoughts on a more effective way of presenting the right amount of information to BIM actors at the right time throughout a building’s lifecycle. A big part of that is transitioning from LOD to what he calls graphical representation (GR) categories. GR avoids the pitfalls of LOD: model overload and lack of accuracy. Check out his post!

Speaking of BIMAXON, it's beta launch will be next week at Autodesk University! If you'll be there, swing by booth # A324 to say hi! We'll be in the Building Design & Fabrication sector, right next to food area 4.
