The new BIM software Wood Framing Oak is powerful and flexible in automating the design process for even the most complex and unique structures – it’s just a matter of figuring out a workflow and setting up required families.

We've already covered multi-layered timber frames and frames with SIP panels for walls, floors and roofs, high-quality ventilated facades, and architectural curtain walls with highly detailed elements. So, now it's time to move on to framing with massive timbers.

Using Wood Framing OAK and sample families, you can create heavy-timber-framed walls, floors and roofs. Also, distribute and manage details used in connections with cuts common for oak frames by using our BIM solution Smart Details and, finally, prepare shop drawings, cut lists, and even export wood elements and details to any CNC machine and CAD/CAM production line, including Hundegger and Weinmann.

There are two things you need to know about our software for framing timber and steel roofs in Revit.

FIRST, the roof framing solutions now include Truss+ (for truss structures) and Roof+ (for rafters & prefabricated roofs).

The whole point of creating BIM models is to reap as much benefit from them as possible. One benefit for structural engineers is that when you create a physical model, you can create an analytical model simultaneously, saving you time later because you can send it straight to structural analysis software instead of creating it from scratch.

So, with that in mind, here is one tip about analytical lines for beams.

If you want to have a physical beam under another beam but keep the analytical lines at the same level, then use the z-offset in the beam properties instead of moving the beam down.

Our third webinar of 2018 will be on February 15th. This one's about creating complex connections automatically, and we'll begin with auto-generating multi-layered wall/floor/roof framing in Revit. That's just the preparation for the fun part, though! Once we've done the framing, we‘ll see how to distribute various connection details (fasteners, hardware, etc.) automatically using our Wood & Metal Framing software and, for even more complex situations, Smart Details, which lets you define rules and insert hundreds of elements throughout your project with a few clicks.
