Join our free 30-minute webinar on June 18th for an expert-level tutorial on how to efficiently design precast concrete structures in Revit. Parking garages can be built from a variety of materials – cast-in-place, precast concrete, steel framing with concrete, even wood. Perhaps most often seen as stand-alone buildings, they are frequently incorporated into a larger structure, concealed below ground level or several floors above ground. Architecturally speaking they can range from simple to highly unique, boasting tailor-made façades. Functionally most are quite plain though they may be outfitted with complex automatic parking systems.

At any rate, we need them. A lot. That’s why they're being built all over the place. Here in Vilnius, Lithuania, car parks are gradually relieving the lack of parking spaces, an all-too-common problem affecting cities worldwide. Underground ones are ideal in the city center here for preserving views of the city’s splendid architecture. Although every situation is different, precast concrete is probably the best choice for your typical, economical, functional parking structure due to its relatively simple design and fast construction timetable that's less affected by weather conditions. Plus architectural ideas can easily be implemented in façade wall panels.

The AEC industry has been undergoing the transition from 2D digital drafting to 3D informational modeling, data management, sharing, linking between people and software platforms. In four words, building information modelling/management. In a word, BIM.

If we look at the case of an independent, standalone parking garage building, most of it is structural. A typical one has simple architecture, and there’s hardly any MEP or other parts of the project to deal with. So in this article, I want to review the design workflow and available tools that make the process efficient in structural BIM models, particularly as regards modeling and documentation.

This free webinar on May 7th will be about designing precast concrete parking garages in Revit, with a focus on the warped double tee slab used in the USA (spoiler alert: new tool will be shown). But first off, why parking decks? Building them with precast makes their design and construction relatively simple, so they're all over the place: here in Lithuania and the rest of Europe, the Middle East, in the US, Down Under, and throughout Asia. So streamlining the workflow for this type of building is important for engineers and manufacturers all around the world.

If you’re a precaster in another country, it might be interesting for you to know that in the US double tee slabs for parking garages are warped. They’re produced just like normal double tees, but then on the construction site, one end is supported evenly while at the other end one stem support is lower than the other. The resultant twist helps with drainage. It’s nice, but it's a pain for BIM modelers because an element (in this case, the DT slab) has one shape in the model but another shape in the drawing. That means that you have to have two elements – one warped, the other planar.

So what you'll see in this webinar is an efficient modeling workflow for designing and producing documentation for precast concrete parking garages and – in particular for the US market – a solution for modeling the warped double tee slab.

Precast Concrete is our design software for Revit that will be used during the webinar to automate all the processes like placing wall and beam reinforcement, placing connections, and creating shop drawings. PLUS we'll unveil a new tool called Floor+C that will help deal with warped double tee slabs. So, it will be a lot, but keep in mind that even your typical precast parking garage (without much architectural ambition) could have 20,000 modeled elements and over 50,000 bars/strands/wires of reinforcement, so having good tools to work with is really important! And on the documentation side, a few hundred sheets means several thousand views, which means you've got thousands and thousands of dimensions and text fields, so automation in every step can end up saving hours of work.

Following the release last November of our Wall Reinforcement tool for placing rebar in precast concrete wall panels in Revit, we got feedback from a lot of users saying they were interested in being able to group rebar.

Well, now you can! Creating rebar as sets brings advantages in dimensioning, getting information for construction without drawings, and also setting visibility of the set in views.

So in addition to some small tweaks and fixes, these settings have been added to the Wall Reinforcement Configurations window to create rebar sets. Just select the type(s) of reinforcement that you want to create as a rebar set...

...and voilà!

Beam Reinforcement Revit extension logo | AGACADUpon client request, we went forward with developing another Revit tool for placing rebar, this time for precast concrete beams. Introducing our Beam Reinforcement tool for Revit!

In this initial release, you can use it to place main rebar and stirrups in beams with rectangular, L, and IT sections. While it's primarily made for precast, it also works for cast-in-place. See the workflow for reinforcing beams automatically in Revit.

Beam Reinforcement is available as part of our Precast Concrete design software, which now covers modeling and documentation of precast elements, wall reinforcement, and beam reinforcement as well.
