The result you'll see is a building facade framed with highly-detailed unitized elements with hundreds of details (like mullions, transoms, window glass holders and drainages, pressure plates, cover plates, insulators, infills, connection brackets, gaskets, bolts, etc.) inserted automatically throughout the Revit model. Fabrication information (shop drawings and cut lists) with the necessary views, schedules, and drawings will be automatically generated, drastically reducing documentation prep time.

Split parameter values

There are 4 new functions that let you split parameter values into parts, select a part, and select or remove characters. To show how the functions work, we'll refer to the windows below that have as parameter values the "comments" S1_W1, S1_W2, and S1_W3.

Visitors to the legendary Crystal Palace, built in London for the Great Exhibition of 1851, were said to be awed by its unprecedented expanses of glass – 900,000 square feet of it (84,000 square metres). So much natural light. So spacious. Such openness to the surrounding Hyde Park, including three large elm trees left standing inside.

And that stunning result was achieved on time – with design and construction completed in under a year, and on budget – at a third of the cost of a prior plan for the facility. Key to such success was the use of the curtain wall – a non-load-bearing skin for a structure. As a façade system, curtain walls became viable as structural advances freed exterior walls of the need to bear big loads. Historically they were chosen mainly for aesthetics, but they have proven to enable performance gains too.

During the past 2 months we've hosted several live webinars covering specialty framing in Revit. On the timber side, those included structural insulated panels, cross laminated timber, and post-frame (a.k.a. heavy timber, mass timber, or oak) constructions. And for metal framing, we delved into ventilated facades, glazing, and curtain walls & panels. In this post we've gathered those webinars into one place.

In each webinar, our BIM application engineer shows the workflow for using our wood and metal framing tools in tandem with custom Revit families and configurations to model walls, floors, and roofs; distribute connection details and hardware; generate shop drawings and cut lists; and export to CNC machines, where applicable.

This free 30-minute webinar on June 30th will be an expert-level tutorial about efficiently making openings for structural framing elements, doors, and windows in Revit® using our Cut Opening BIM Solution. Openings will be configured and created for beams of various shapes and sizes as well as for window and door openings, which will be transferred from the architectural model into the structural model.

The result you'll see is a Revit structural file with an increased LOD due to the openings and placement of beam pockets. All walls will have openings corresponding to the sizes of doors and windows in the architectural model. Openings will be tagged to provide information about their size and elevation according to the level of your choice.

Join our free 30-minute webinar on June 17th for an expert-level demonstration of modeling light-gauge steel structures in Revit efficiently and preparing accurate shop drawings and cut lists for them. Using our powerful Metal Framing BIM software that's been continually improved based on the input of framing professionals from all around the globe, we'll show how to quickly frame single- and multi-layer walls, floors, and roofs for prefabrication. (The tool can also be applied to designing ventilated facades and curtain wall systems.) Working with volumetric massing in the early phases of a new project benefits all parties involved, like designers, developers, planners. It helps convey the key ideas behind the design intent and better understand the relationships between the new building, the site, and immediate built environment. Wouldn’t it be handy to be able to build your project on the finalized and agreed upon volumes of the future building? In the third part of this Revit Massing series, we’re going to discuss how you can continue modeling from the conceptual massing stage right through to detailed design and also be able to coordinate it with other consultants involved in the project.

In the previous articles, we talked about the difference between an in-place mass and a mass family and how to create a conceptual mass family in Revit. Part III here will focus on how to generate Revit elements based on an existing in-place mass family. Before we proceed, let’s recap the main difference between two mass types in Revit.

Designing roofs in Revit can pose certain difficulties particularly for users less familiar with roof modeling tools. Creating exact roof geometry and size for a new build or modeling an existing roof to given dimensions is not always straightforward. If we follow some key principles, however, we can model quite a few roofs simply by using Revit's ‘Roof by Footprint’ tool. For more complex roof profile shapes, ‘Roof by Extrusion’ is typically used, which we will cover in future articles. Other ways of creating roofs are 3D massing using the ‘Roof by Face’ tool, which allows you to come up with a greater variety of complex roof designs, and In-Place Massing or Mass Families, which allows you to design irregular roofs and tensile roof structures.

For now, we’ll focus on some of the more common roof types used for small-scale residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

To create a simple hip roof with the ‘Roof by Footprint’ tool, follow the steps below.

  1. Have your perimeter walls and levels ready
  2. In Architecture tab select Roof – Roof by Footprint tool and choose desired roof type
  3. Choose a relevant level for a bottom face of the roof
  4. Use Pick Walls tools and hover over a wall – press tab to select all joined perimeter walls
  5. Define roof parameters like overhangs, slopes, offset from level, rafter cut
  6. Finish the roof by exiting roof editor
