During the past 2 months we've hosted several live webinars covering specialty framing in Revit. On the timber side, those included structural insulated panels, cross laminated timber, and post-frame (a.k.a. heavy timber, mass timber, or oak) constructions. And for metal framing, we delved into ventilated facades, glazing, and curtain walls & panels. In this post we've gathered those webinars into one place.

In each webinar, our BIM application engineer shows the workflow for using our wood and metal framing tools in tandem with custom Revit families and configurations to model walls, floors, and roofs; distribute connection details and hardware; generate shop drawings and cut lists; and export to CNC machines, where applicable.

We've been diligently testing our Tools4BIM DOCK* against Revit 2021 to ensure complete compatibility of all the BIM Solutions and Tools4Revit Add-ins therein. Want to export light-gauge steel wall, floor, truss, or roof panel frames from Autodesk® Revit® to a CNC machine?

Our CNC Exporter for Steel Frames automatically assembles all framing members per user definitions and send all necessary data and geometry to the machine or production line you're running for efficient prefabrication of metal structures. We have a CNC Exporter that's compatible with machines manufactured by Metroll, Royal C.N.C., Howick, and Scottsdale.

Autodesk® Revit® massing is a powerful tool for generating masses that works at any scale, whether you’re at the conceptual level of a building, at the detailed level refining the fixings and furniture, or working on an entire masterplan. To be able to use this tool to your advantage you should know a couple of techniques. There are two basic workflows for creating masses: create the massing within the project itself (In-Place Massing) or create it in a separate conceptual mass family, which is then loaded into the project. Here's a brief comparison of these approaches.

In-Place Massing is carried out directly inside the project environment.

  • Allows you to see the rest of the project context, which is useful when designing at an early stage
  • The most straightforward approach and works well when the building volumes are not too complex
  • Good for preliminary sketching of forms and is the recommended approach for early stage design and for conceptual building studies

On the other hand, a Conceptual Mass Family is built in the ‘conceptual massing environment’, outside of the project environment.

  • Iterations of the family can be placed as needed around the site.
  • The family can be loaded into multiple Revit models.
  • Different team members can work on the different versions of the family.
  • Better for developing and refining a building mass. The separate environment has additional visibility of 3D levels and reference planes which makes more complex parametric modeling easier.

Our Wood Framing and Metal Framing BIM software for Revit has gotten another round of new features. Among the latest enhancements: more flexibility to control brace groups (including adding partial brace groups and allowing braces to run across openings), separate preassemblies for joined openings, special layouts for paneling, and to align the secondary stud system with the Project Base Point.

Current users of Wood/Metal Framing Wall/Floor/Roof, be sure to get these updates installed via the TOOLS4BIM Dock and start benefiting from them today.

Let's get into the new features that have been included in the latest version.

1. Separate Preassemblies for Joined Openings

This feature lets you make separate preassemblies for openings that are part of a joined opening — and the preassemblies will exclude other elements (like top plate supports, etc.) that extend across the joined opening. You can find this option to create separate preassemblies for joined openings in the 'Modify Configuration Settings' tab of the Default Framing Parameters window:

In this example of a joined opening consisting of a door and a window, we want a separate preassembly for the door and another for the window. Since the top support runs the width of the joined opening, it will not be included into either preassembly.

BIM is a process that enhances collaboration between architects, designers, engineers, and construction professionals by enabling multiple teams to work on the same 3D model of an asset at the same time. In other words, it allows for concurrent design, planning, and construction work to be performed by those BIM actors.

By using BIM companies do not have to continually send various edited models with appended information; instead, they can do it in the same file, and the rest of the participants receive updated data timely.

Today, we take up the third topic in our #AU2019 series: Digital Asset Inventories & BIM for Facility Management.

Taking a digital inventory of facilities — from factories, hospitals, and schools to shopping malls and industrial plants — is becoming increasingly popular because it makes managing them easier and more effective. This is especially true for buildings that were constructed without digital documentation because, when they are handed over to new owners or managers, a daunting lack of information often comes with them. Information that is available is more often than not in the form of paper documents, be those drawings, technical specs, or project and product certificates. Those in turn may be outdated, deteriorated, and can turn up missing over the years. This all means that a large portion of facility information is either inaccessible from the get-go or is subject to expiration or decay.

Digitizing buildings using accurately processed data obtained from 3D laser scanning not only solves these problems but brings a host of benefits besides. Check out the attached white paper wherein we lay out the 6 stages comprising the digital inventory process and the benefits to be accrued.
