Sweden's BIM software leader AEC AB chose AGA CAD developed frame construction and engineering network design solutions as the most appropriate for their clients.

Negotiations, which started in last year's second half have finally culminated in the beginning of this year when a partnership agreement was signed. AEC AB - one of the largest software distributing companies operating in Sweden is interested in representing AGA CAD not just in Sweden, but in Finland and other Scandinavian countries too: Denmark and Norway.

AEC AB is a leading Swedish company providing special software and services for construction industry. Seeing that there is a shortage of BIM programs for effective design in the market, the AEC Company sought add-ons for Autodesk Revit programs that could be offered to Scandinavian designers.

About half a year ago, AEC team's attention was caught by "AGA CAD" developed framed building design tools, fit for the Autodesk Revit software users. This company was looking for IT solution that would be similar to MWF HomeBuilder tools but made for the European market and not only for the 2*4" system used in USA market. So AEC AB decided to test AGA CAD developed program packages Wood Framing and Metal Framing, used for framed building design. AEC representatives were satisfied with testing results.

AGA CAD is a software developer that is looking for the fastest and the most convenient way to work in Autodesk® Revit®. AGA CAD software is specialized in various fields like: architecture, structure, MEP, analysis, etc. This time I want to tell about MEP part of Revit.

AGA CAD is creating professional BIM solutions for MEP engineers that work with Autodesk Revit. I can count over 10 products that can help MEP engineers in their everyday workflow. Our main goal is to find the weakest points in Revit and develop the solution that will increase work productivity in such cases. Some of these solutions can increase work productivity but some of them can open new features that even Revit does not have.

Our streamed news readers know that we share our BIM advances in productivity enhancement working with Revit®. Usually we talk about how Revit plugins can help you to simplify your workflow. But this time we would like to share advices on how to work smarter without using Revit plugins. No additional software is required for this tutorial – all tools are available in standard Revit interface. So, now we suggest Tips & Tricks from AGA CAD on how to go into next Level of Detail (LOD) to create wall mounted railings.

For many Revit users railings seem to be limited in flexibility. However advanced users can achieve various results using Revit railing families. In this tutorial I will explain how to create and adjust wall mounted railings.

First of all, let's create any railings or any stairs that include railings on it, next to a wall or a corner. In standard Revit templates railings have balusters which go down to the host of the railing.

As railing is a Revit system family we can't create it from scratch therefore we have to duplicate an existing family. So let's select existing railing and in Instance Properties window select Edit Type tool.

Some time ago we gave you a few examples of how our clients' requests can become improvements of AGACAD products. Thanks for all of you who contributed by giving us advices on how to improve our products or just expressing you wishes for Revit productivity increase.

The newest case of our client's impact in AGACAD software development is related to our BIM solution Smart Assemblies. Our team released an updated version of this application for Autodesk® Revit® at the end of January. Do you know what functionality has been included? We have added Rebar Mass calculation to Smart Assemblies. Our loyal client Jason Wallis from Hanssen Pty Ltd Drafting Office who is the enthusiastic user of this solution for Revit, has sent us a request on December 3, 2014:

"I remember seeing in one of the latest updates for Smart Assemblies a new feature that calculates the mass/weight of all the elements inside the assembly. Does this also work for rebar?
In the past, I've created a 'calculated value' parameter for rebar weight for each shop drawing, which I have had to manually add to every drawing. If it's now possible to create a schedule that will report the mass/weight of the rebar automatically, I'd love to know how to do it."

Many of AGA CAD's created solutions for Autodesk® Revit® can do a lot of things and calculate a lot of new parameters that you need. Basically these parameters are Shared Parameters and could not be inserted into tag families in the same manner as simple parameters. Do you know how should you use these parameters in tagging?

Firstly, you have to create and calculate required parameter in Revit using corresponding Revit add-on from AGA CAD. This parameter will be shared. I have calculated element's bottom elevation. This elevation is neccesary in some cases when placing elements into the project, ex. hangers, cut openings, etc.

If you want to add these parameters to your tags, you should do the following:

AGA CAD team inserted new features to RAS Manager for architects. Now architects will be able to calculate the total window/door area in each room and use this parameter for tagging and scheduling. Additionally, possibilities to calculate floor altitude and floor rough altitude were created. This can help architects find each layer elevation and use this calculated parameter in scheduling and tagging as well.

So what's new in Revit® plugin RAS Manager?

In the last post I described my viewpoint on plain Autodesk® Revit® possibilities creating assemblies. This time I'll share my experience using Revit together with additional BIM software.

Let's take an example project and run briefly through the drawings' preparation using Smart Assemblies. Even if you have a small project like in the picture below with something like 50 columns, 80 beams, some wall panels and 500 hosted details, plus 300 openings, you will still have a lot of hours of work to complete your drawings.

Let's say I have configured dimensioning of one beam, but I have to make 30 drawings of the same kind of beam just with different lengths, hosted details and openings. Drawing looks like this:
