Many projects are carried out by several different designers, but some part of information is still required for all of them. In this case Autodesk® Revit® users can use the projects directly or use linked Revit files. Sometimes we, designers, work with different software products, so collaboration between them should be done using IFC file format. In many cases, designers use linked files to get the project “lighter”. We usually get a bunch of questions concerning this. The main question is “Do your tools work with linked files?” And my answer is in the affirmative.

After the duct, pipe or other MEP element was placed in the project, all the elements should be hanged with structural connections. You can simply distribute hanging elements on ducts, pipes, cable trays, conduits or other line based elements using Smart Hangers. After the distribution of hangers on line based elements, all the hangers should be connected to some structural or architectural elements, such as Roofs, Floors, and Structural Framings or Reference planes.

Our BIM solution Cut Opening is a "BIM team" software that can insert openings into Autodesk® Revit® model for MEP services. Cut Opening inserts holes where ducts, pipes, cable trays or conduits clash with structural elements like walls, floors, roofs, ceilings, beams or columns. So how should the BIM team work with this solution?

The main rule of insertion of openings is this: Openings can be added only into the ORIGINAL FILE WHERE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS ARE. There can be such scenarios:

We released New Cut Opening version this September (2015-09-17). This Cut Opening version is more powerful and more intelligent. Users are given a lot of configurable tools that allow users to add different openings for different MEP services, system classifications, etc.

We are releasing new Cut Opening version on 17th of September and it has already caused quite a commotion.

Cut Opening is valuable helper for all Revit users who are interested in BIM, Revit, MEP, Architecture and Structure Engineering, BIM management, BIM coordination, etc. It defines and reserves spaces in Revit® models for ducts, pipes, cable trays and conduits. Structural engineers and architects can then review, revise, and create the approved holes with just one click.

Some new Cut Opening features:

  • This application for Revit enables you to predefine configurations of openings shapes, sizes, and joining offsets that are dependent on MEP elements size;
  • Cut Opening defines joining distance between several openings;
  • Automatically inserts Fire Dampers where ducts clash with building construction, etc.

So Cut Opening automatically creates suitable holes based on the location and types of clashes detected for MEP elements in current, linked, or IFC files. To conclude of what Cut Opening is capable of check this promo video I’ve recorded:

New version of our popular BIM solution is on his way to our customers. The newest Cut Opening version will be different compared with the current version.

We updated inner processes of our Cut Opening software: this tool will be much faster because of the new engine. The speed of our new product is not the only thing that we upgraded. We added new features to our product, such as parameterized opening insertion with predefined offsets, joining configurations, fire dampers insertion, and more. In this article I will introduce you with new features and possibilities of Cut Opening solution.

With Design technologies development trends moving forward, we aim to build models as compliant with reality as possible. Going to this stage we should think about fully detailed model elements, exact element positions, exact calculations, exact material takeoffs, etc.

One of the points of contact are the openings around the line based MEP objects and architectural or structural elements and their clashes. These clashes could impact not only incorrect material takeoffs but further structural calculations as well. So having this in mind, we should carefully check every place where ducts, pipes, cable trays, or conduits meet building elements such as walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, beams etc.

Autodesk® Revit® users are not provided with simple tools to do so – thus they built their own void families to insert them in each place where MEP objects clash with structural elements (Picture 1). Or in other way, they are trying to edit boundaries of these architectural or structural elements, like walls, floors, etc. (Picture 2). These two examples of placing openings in required places could last for hours.

Projects can usually last for a long time and in the end of the projects you can feel your productivity decline. Even MEP engineers get the project when the deadline is NOW. It is normal and usual problem for big projects. The projects become boring and it seems that everything is done but still you have to do documentation things. Autodesk® Revit® users are quite familiar with work in collaboration with different parts of the project (ex. Architects and MEP Engineers).

Usually they are linking architecture model to MEP model or otherwise. The architects add needed information such as number and name. The same information should appear in spaces. Moreover, if there are hundreds of rooms it can take way too long to type each one by hand. We have a few suggestions for transferring room information into spaces (using Revit by itself or with Revit app):

Cut Opening application for Revit

Cut Opening defines and reserves spaces in Revit® models for ducts, pipes, cable trays and conduits. Structural engineers and architects can then review, revise, and create the approved holes with a single click. Suitable openings are designed automatically based on the location and types of clashes detected for MEP elements in current, linked, or IFC files.

Currently we are working on the parameterized openings that will be dependent on the main elements’ sizes, insulation thicknesses, auto join configurations, top and bottom offset, etc. In other words we are creating the solution that will cut the openings with dependence on MEP line based element.
